Many know us as the "church winery" because our winery is housed in a century old church that originally sat in Shalersville, Ohio. Now operating as a boutique winery in Harpersfield, Ohio since 2002, South River Vineyard has established itself as a quiet, relaxing, and most unique place to enjoy a fantastic view of the vineyards with quality wine and good company. Located just 50 miles east of Cleveland and a quick 20 minute drive to Geneva-on-the Lake, South River Vineyard is a must see winery when you are visiting the area.
The story behind the idea comes from owner, Gene Sigel. While on his way to Kent, Sigel noticed an abandoned Methodist Episcopal Church as he waited for a stop light to change. Intrigued by the structure, he stopped and asked a neighbor for permission to photograph it. She told him he could do more than that, he could have the building for the trouble of dismantling it. A week later, Sigel was making plans to move the building, piece by piece, to his site in Geneva.

The old church was built in 1892 and has gone through many changes throughout its existence. To keep the church's long history alive, the winery still maintains the original pews, interior door, wainscoting, flooring, and some of the stained glass windows.
We often refer to ourselves as the "quiet winery." While other wineries have weekly entertainment, we offer the relaxed approach to enjoying wine. With its serene setting and rich ambiance, South River Vineyard is the perfect place to converse and spend quality time with a close friend, family member, or date.
We offer wine tasting which enables customers to find the perfect wine that satisfies their palate, before they buy. From there, you may purchase by the glass or bottle and enjoy the wines at the winery (we recork bottles you don't finish!), or buy a bottle or case to take with you.
We encourage our customers to stroll through the vineyards with their wines. Relax and have a seat on the veranda, cozy up by the outdoor fireplace in the rustic pavilion or enjoy the view from our new rooftop pavilion. Customers are welcome to bring their own picnic food.
Our latest endeavor has been the addition of a wine cave with a covered pavilion on top. The rooftop pavilion will be used for additional seating that allows customers to enjoy their wine outside with a gorgeous view of the vineyards.
The wine cave is made from precast highway culverts. It has long been noted that many of the finest wines come from caves. Due to the invariant temperature and high humidity level of caves, wineries have typically used caves for the barrel aging of wines. The new cave will be used for wine storage as well as for aging wine in barrels and tanks.
